Taking steps to lower the carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from a building’s electricity and heating supply will change its energy supply and demand profiles. 

This could be through a combination of importing less energy, exporting more, using energy at different times to make better use of variable generation or time-dependent energy prices, or storing energy to do so.
